Radcliffe's fellow cast members, Jenny Agutter and Richard Griffiths, (who also appear alongside the 17-year-old star in the Potter movies) were forced to climb out of a window to escape a theater besieged by mostly teenage fans.
Police were called to disperse the throng crowded outside the stage door of the Gielgud Theatre, where Radcliffe is appearing in Equus. Security staff managed to escort Radcliffe to his car, but Agutter and Griffiths were forced to leave through a window.
For Griffiths, the maneuver proved difficult, according to the show's producer David Pugh. "You try to get Richard Griffiths out of a back window – it was a bit touch and go," Pugh told London's Evening Standard of the substantial-sized actor who also plays Uncle Vernon Dursley in the Potter movies.
Radcliffe-mania is expected to peak for the first night of Peter Shaffer's play debuting Tuesday. The young star's stage appearance has prompted huge interest – partly because he appears nude, swears, smokes and feigns blinding several horses.
