49ers Release Star Linebacker Aldon Smith After Third DUI Arrest
08/07/2015 AT 08:40 PM EDT
This was the fifth time Smith has been arrested in the past three years, and his third DUI arrest since entering the league in 2011. Smith was suspended for the first nine games of the 2014 season for violating the NFL's personal conduct and substance abuse policies.
A Santa Clara Police Department spokesperson told the NFL Network, "As (Smith) was backing his vehicle to park his vehicle he hit another vehicle that was adjacent to his vehicle."
The spokesperson said Smith left the scene, but then returned on foot and submitted to field sobriety testing. (He did not disclose Smith's blood alcohol content.)
After releasing Smith, the 49ers released a statement reading, "This organization has tried very hard to help Aldon fight his issues. Although he is no longer a member of this team, our support and concern for him will continue."
Earlier today, Smith told ABC7 in San Francisco, which was first to report the news, "Simple as this; Justice will be served, the truth will come out, there's no DUI."
Smith added, "But as far as everything is concerned, it will work out the way it's supposed to work out. That's all."
Earlier this week, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke told reporters that Smith "is like any young player. He's growing up and he's matured."
Baalke added, "I'm really pleased with the way he's handled things, the way he's working both personally and professionally."
