Sure, 5 Seconds of Summer might be touring with One Direction, but hear them out: They are no boy band.

After One Direction discovered the Australian pop-rockers – thanks to their impressive cover of Wheatus's "Teenage Dirtbag" – Harry Styles and his bandmates invited them onto their tour.

"It was all very scary for us because we were a young rock band type of thing," drummer Ashton Irwin tells Radio Disney in an interview airing Aug. 4 (6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT). "We were very confused by why we would go on tour with One Direction in the first place because it was so different."

However, after thinking the offer over, they changed their tune.

"It seemed like a good idea to grow our music and our live performance [skills]," he said. "It would make such a dynamic tour and really explain the difference between the two bands."

Added Irwin: "It's cool that young kids get to go home with a bit of education on rock music."

Now that their self-titled debut album has officially arrived Stateside, the "She Looks So Perfect" crooners are enjoying their ever-expanding fan base. But the more exposure they get, the more often they're asked about their somewhat-mysterious name.

"People ask, 'Why is it called 5 Seconds of Summer when there's four of you?' " Irwin said.

"I'd change [the name] to '4 Seconds of Summer' just so people stop asking what it means," said guitarist Luke Hemmings.

Irwin then joked, "I'd want a name that is so self-explanatory that no one can ask us any questions about it – 'Generic Band Number One.' "
