A large tree fell through a house and trapped a 20-year-old woman sleeping in her bed in Long Island, New York, police say.

The 5,000-pound tree came crashing through just after midnight on Monday, Nassau County Police Officer Eloise Abdullah confirmed to PEOPLE.

The tree struck the roof and fell into the second-story bedroom of a home on Wooleys Lane East in the Great Neck section of Long Island, New York, according to Nassau County police.

The woman, a college student home for summer break, was sleeping when she got pinned by the tree and debris that landed on her. It took emergency responders about two hours on the scene to free her, PIX 11 News reports.

The woman, who was not identified, was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for multiple trauma injuries. She is listed in serious but stable condition.

Fire officials said she may have been saved by sleeping on her side – and by her bed, which likely helped absorb the shock of the tree.

It's not known what caused the tree to fall.

Some neighbors were left without power temporarily after the tree also pinned live wires behind the home.
