Sunday marked the 14th Annual BET Awards
, celebrating the best in African American entertainment. But the weekend also saw a string of violence at unofficial parties.
A 33-year-old man was shot to death in East Hollywood around 5:20 a.m. PST on Sunday, the Los Angeles Police Department confirms to PEOPLE. The shooting was at an unsanctioned BET Awards pre-party at the Monalizza restaurant
, and four others were injured, the L.A. Times reports
"The suspect is described as a black male, black hair, between the ages of 20 and 25 with a goatee and two braids," Officer Thompson of the LAPD tells PEOPLE, noting that the perpetrator is still at large.
After the awards show, shots were fired at another unofficial BET Awards party, this time at a supperclub, around 2:30 a.m. PST.
"There was a shooting at the parking lot just north of the supperclub. We had some officers hear shots fired in that area on Las Palmos [Avenue] in the parking lot. They responded, and they found shell casings and blood drops in the parking lot," LAPD officer T. Chung confirms to PEOPLE, adding no victim or suspect was ever found and that a follow-up investigation is under way.
The shootings – and a nightclub stabbing, reported by TMZ
– took place at events that were "unauthorized and unaffiliated with the BET Awards," the network said in a statement.
During the show, which featured standout performances by Nicki Minaj
and Pharrell Williams, host Chris Rock made no mention
of the unofficial pre- and after-party violence, while rapper Nelly told reporters
on the red carpet, "You can't place [the blame] on the BET."
