The Danish Girl actress has inked a deal to star in the upcoming Tomb Raider film for MGM, Warner Bros and GK Films, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Wave director Roar Uthaug is on board to direct the reboot, which he has said is based on the current rebooted Tomb Raider video game series.
In the updated video game series, archaeologist and explorer Lara Croft bears less resemblance to Angelina Jolie Pitt, who famously played the role onscreen in 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003's Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.
"I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that's definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well," Uthaug said in a recent interview about the franchise's approach to Lara as a character.
A new film version of the franchise has been in development for the last few years, and Star Wars: Episode VIII's Daisy Ridley had been in the conversation to star.
Vikander recently completed work on another action franchise reboot, Jason Bourne, and is still fresh off her Oscar win for best supporting in actress in The Danish Girl.
