Long before American Idol's 2002 debut, the show's current celebrity judges were already music stars with chart-topping hits under their belts.

But what if Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. had auditioned for the Fox singing competition? What songs would they have selected?

Wonder no more! PEOPLE has asked the trio for our new collector's issue The Best of American Idol, and the answers might surprise you.

"I would have done a ballad like 'I Hope You Dance,' and I'd feel every single lyric," Lopez, 46, says of Lee Ann Womack's hit.

Meanwhile, Connick, 48, is sticking with his roots. "I would have highlighted where I'm from by singing and playing a New Orleans tune on the piano, because nobody else would do that," he explains.

As for Urban, 48, he calls out a blast from his past.

"I was on four different TV singing shows between the ages of 9 and 16. I played guitar and did country songs," the singer says. "On the last one I did an Air Supply song, [All Out of Love]. I thought I was good, but I was terrible."

Urban adds: "You can find it on YouTube. I would've never predicted the career I have watching that."

On Thursday, season 15's Top 8 was determined as two contestants were sent home.
