South African police are investigating the murder of an American tourist after her body was discovered in a hotel room in Cape Town this week, reports say.

The body of the 39-year-old woman was found Wednesday afternoon at the Camps Bay Retreat Boutique Hotel, IOL News reports. The area is said to be one of Cape Town's most popular tourist destinations, and the hotel has a certificate of excellence on TripAdvisor with a 4.5 rating and 282 reviews.

A 41-year-old man of Guatemalan origin has been arrested in connection with the case and will face murder charges, South African spokeswoman Noloyiso Rwexana told the Associated Press on Friday.

Little is known of the circumstances surrounding the woman's death, but IOL reports that she was on vacation when she was killed.

The U.S. Embassy in South Africa told the AP that the killing took place on Wednesday. Local authorities have not released many details about the case as it is still under investigation, according to IOL.
