The body of Sheila von Weise-Mack, 62, was discovered by a taxi driver on Tuesday, according to ABC News. He found her remains in his trunk outside the Saint Regis Bali resort, where she was staying.
The woman's daughter, 19-year-old Heather Mack, and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, have been arrested in connection with her murder.
Von Weise-Mack was last seen alive on Monday at the Saint Regis. Surveillance footage from the hotel shows her arguing with her daughter in the lobby.
The taxi driver who discovered the body says the couple hailed his cab outside the hotel, only to drop off the suitcase, along with two other bags, and never return. Police later found Mack and Schaefer at another hotel.
Neighbors in the family's Oak Park, Illinois, community say the mother and daughter's relationship was troubled.
"Police were here all the time," one neighbor told the Chicago Tribune. "They would call police on each other. It turned very abusive and volatile."
David Powers, spokesman for Oak Park, told the paper that police had been called to the family's home 86 times since 2004.
"They basically said they were a wide range of calls, mostly for domestic trouble and theft," he said. "There were several missing person calls, and a few 911 hang-ups that police responded to."
Others were shocked by the violent death. "I was leaving this morning and going past the TV set and I heard something about Heather Mack, which is a very rare name," a family member told ABC News. "But I just thought the world was too big for that to be her … I don't believe this."
Mack and Schaefer have been detained and are currently being questioned in connection with the case, according to Bali police.
