Bernard Madoff's last surviving son has died of cancer.
His lawyer, Martin Flumenbaum, says Andrew Madoff
died Wednesday at a New York City hospital. He says the cause was mantle cell lymphoma
Andrew was one of Bernard Madoff's two sons. The other, Mark, committed suicide
"Andrew Madoff has lost his courageous battle against mantle cell lymphoma. He died peacefully at Sloan Kettering on Sept. 3, 2014, surrounded by his loving family," Flumenbaum said in a statement.
Funeral arrangements will be private.
Mark and Andrew Madoff both worked on a trading desk at Madoff's firm. It was a side of the business that wasn't directly involved in the Ponzi scheme.
Last year, Andrew Madoff spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about his cancer recurrence, which he discovered during his yearly doctor's visit in October 2012.
"I was blindsided," he told PEOPLE in April 2013. "I had no symptoms. I felt fine."
He said he believed the stress caused by his father's actions opened the door for the cancer's return.
"One way to think of this is the scandal and everything that happened killed my brother very quickly," he says. "And it's killing me slowly."
The illness did not change how he felt about his father, he said.
"I will never forgive him for what he did," he said. "He's already dead to me."
He reiterated that to PEOPLE in an update about his condition in August 2013, saying he still had not heard a word from Bernie.
Said Andrew: "Even on my deathbed I will never forgive him for what he did."
