As a Golden Globe winner herself, Angela Bassett knows a little about award-worthy acting. And that's why she wasn't surprised by Thursday's nomination for her American Horror Story: Hotel costar Lady Gaga.

"She's quite a performer, right?" Bassett told PEOPLE after announcing the nominees for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton. The list placed her pop star colleague in contention for best performance by an actress in a limited series or TV movie.

"She's a performer, so it just translates," added Bassett, who took home her own trophy in 1994 for her breakout stint as pop icon Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It. "The character is written – the Countess, the grand, the queen, whatever – so she's in her world singing, at the center. [Musicians] sing center, everything else revolved around them. So you can see some cross-pollination."

"She's a super hard worker," Bassett, 57, gushed of Gaga, 29. "Very gracious and just lovely – just a lovely, lovely person to be around and to work with. … She comes out and has conversations with you, with the crew. Makes everyone just feel very welcome. Makes a joke or is light-hearted or shares about herself and her experiences – what she's learned, what you taught her. She's lovely!"

The "Applause" singer shared a thankful Instagram about her nod showing her mom, manager and beloved pup Asia celebrating. And another AHS costar, Sarah Paulson, tweeted her own congratulations to Gaga.

"So thrilled for the uber gifted @ladygaga on her richly deserved recognition this morning," wrote Paulson, 40. "What a gift you have been to AHSHOTEL!!"
