New bride Angelina Jolie has been mixing business, pleasure and do-gooding on her getaway to the Mediterranean island of Malta with husband Brad Pitt and their six kids.
On Sunday, Jolie visited a Maltese naval rescue headquarters in her United Nations role as Special Envoy of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.
The Oscar winner, 39, also visited Syrian refugee families in the Maltese capital of Valletta. More than 2,500 people have drowned or gone missing attempting to cross the Mediterranean this year to escape conflict.
"There is a direct link between the conflicts in Syria and elsewhere and the rise in deaths at sea in the Mediterranean," Jolie said in a statement. "We have to understand what drives people to take the fearful step of risking their children's lives on crowded, unsafe vessels; it is the overwhelming desire to find refuge."
Jolie has been juggling the various components of her life during the family's time in Malta, including scouting locations for By the Sea, the intimate, character-driven drama she wrote and is directing. She and Pitt, 50, will costar as a married couple who become obsessed with their neighbors.
"We are working together on a drama about grief and finding a way through a difficult marriage," Jolie told PEOPLE.
"We find it very funny that it's our honeymoon."
As for play, the family has been spotted bowling on the island of Gozo and swimming at Wied-il-Ghasri, a picturesque fjord popular for its underwater caves.
They have also enjoyed boating excursions aboard a luxury yacht, and on Saturday, Pitt and Jolie were spotted taking the kids for a swimming-and-sunbathing tour on the Mediterranean.
In full Mom-and-Dad mode aboard the yacht over the weekend, the newlyweds snapped pictures of their playful brood, with Jolie sporting a far more casual look than her classic customary style – shorts!
