Oscar winner Hathaway, 32, and Taymor, 62, a multiple Tony winner (The Lion King), will collaborate on the George Brant play Grounded, a 70-minute monologue about a fighter pilot who is reassigned to operate drone strikes after getting pregnant, the Public Theater said Wednesday.
"An ace fighter pilot reassigned to a remote-controlled drone faces 12-hour shifts hunting targets from her Air Force trailer followed by twelve in the suburbs with her family in this 'gripping' (New York Times) new play about the complicated consequences of waging war without leaving home," the Public said in its description of the play.
Performances will begin April 7 in the Anspacher Theater, and the play will officially open April 23 and run through May 17.
Hathaway, who won the Oscar for Les Misérables, is a board member at the Public Theater and has acted for the theater before – in the 2009 Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night.
"Grounded is a brilliant and important play, a meditation on the human and moral costs of our astonishing military technology," the Public's artistic director, Oskar Eustis, said in a statement. "This promises to be an unforgettable theatrical event, and an important addition to our national conversation."
