"Unfortunately he has not been located," Dutchess County Dutchess County Sheriff’s Capt. John Watterson tells PEOPLE.
The Dutchess County Sheriff's Office and the New York State Park Police are searching for Jones, a 32-year-old model, in the waters near Staatsburg, New York, where the pair were kayaking Saturday morning in a borrowed two-person kayak, Watterson says.
The couple were not wearing life jackets when they entered waters known for their strong currents, Watterson says.
Alcohol "may have played a role in the capsizing, but it is under investigation," he adds. "I am led to believe these two people had little to no experience with kayaks. They saw it there [at a private estate] and took it into the river.
"It's extremely important [to wear life jackets], and this case is a sad reminder of that," Watterson says. "Going out into the river in a kayak can be more dangerous than people expect. The Hudson River has a strong current and people aren't prepared."
Kayaking experts have told PEOPLE that it is imperative to wear a life jacket or personal flotation device while on the Hudson River.
The pair launched the boat from a private estate in Staatsburg, about 14 miles north of Poughkeepsie, at around 9 a.m., Watterson says. Lennox-Fruchtmann, 22, was in the water for about 20 minutes before being picked up by a passing vessel at 9:50 a.m.
Lennox-Fruchtmamn, who was not injured and did not require medical treatment, "is doing okay, from what I understand," Watterson says.
"She is understandably upset and is understandably anxious for some results," he adds. "She is anxious to find him."
Reps for Jones, Lennox-Fruchtmann and Lennox have not returned PEOPLE's requests for comment.
