The sudden rain on Sunday didn't dampen Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross's spirits on their wedding day.

On the contrary, the long-believed good luck sign only made the moment they exchanged vows even more enchanted.

"They waited for the rain to stop, but it only added to the beauty of the property and ceremony," a source tells PEOPLE of the nuptials held at the Connecticut home of the groom's mother, singing legend Diana Ross.

The bohemian-style wedding mixed traditional and eclectic elements that showcased the couple's commitment to family and fun.

The bride, 29, skipped a traditional wedding gown in favor of a crop top, lace skirt and Neil Lane jewelry (the groom, 26, wore Dolce and Gabbana) but stuck to traditional yet meaningful vows during the ceremony, which Diana officiated.

"Everyone was crying," the source says.

In a further sign of their family-first approach, Simpson tapped son Bronx, 5, to walk her down the aisle, while her big sister, Jessica Simpson – also a newlywed – served as matron of honor.

Jessica's kids, Maxwell, 2, and Ace, 1, served as flower girl and ring bearer, respectively. A choir sang "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" at the end of the ceremony.

Afterward, nobody seemed happier for the newlyweds than the former Supreme, who serenaded them with her 1981 hit, "Endless Love."

"When Diana got up to sing at the reception, she surprised everyone, even her kids!" a source says. "She was the only one on the dance floor and everyone rushed to see her."

The couple's free-spirit sensibility was further captured in their bohemian-chic-themed reception, which was designed by wedding planner Mindy Weiss and featured dreamcatchers and vintage fabric covering the tent walls.

Inside, guests munched on a salad made up of burrata and mozzarella cheeses, prosciutto, grilled vegetables, garlic croutons and baby arugula, dressed with olive oil.

Later, the buffet-style dinner included sliced beef fillets, baked butternut squash polenta with smoked gouda cheese, chanterelle mushrooms, roasted cauliflower salad, Southern-style fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, deviled eggs with bacon, hush puppies and pasta.

Guests partied until 1 a.m. – but the festivities didn't end there.

The newlyweds wrapped up their wedding weekend Monday with a big home-style barbecue, also at Diana's home.
