On Monday, Ashley Monroe stopped by PEOPLE to share details about her new album, The Blade, which is out now and available on iTunes. The singer-songwriter opened up an emotional moment onstage and chimed in on dear friends Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert's recent Twitter interaction – starring her!
"I think every song on this record has an edge of some sort … it cuts," Monroe, 28, told PEOPLE in June. "That's why I thought The Blade was a perfect title."
"The whole album sums up exactly where I am in my life in my life right now, the sad parts, the happy parts, the hopeful parts – it's all where I am right now," Monroe, who is married to Chicago White Sox pitcher John Danks, told PEOPLE earlier this week.
Last week, pals Shelton, 39, and Lambert, 31, announced they were calling it quits after 10 years together.
However, a few days after the divorce, the former couple communicated publicly via social media to spread love for Monroe and her new album.
"They've both been my friends for 10 years," she says. "I'm really close to both of them, so I thought that was very thoughtful and awesome of them to support me in that way."
The former Pistol Annies member adds: "They know what they're doing – they're smart."
As for her own big year, Monroe says a New York City show in March really took the cake.
"I got to play Madison Square Garden on my dad's birthday – my dad passed away when I was 13 – and I sing this song called "Like a Rose" that I wrote. I just got overwhelmed with, 'Oh my gosh – this is so amazing on my dad's birthday!' Special days like that I get emotional," she explains. "When I'm singing, I'm always emotional, I'm always floating – I'm very much into it when I'm singing!"
