The match between King and Riggs is remembered because it started a conversation about gender equality. In the end King defeated Riggs, and their match became the most watched television sports event of all time.

Per a press release announcing the movie has begun principal photography: "King and Riggs were on opposites sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With a supportive husband urging he to fight the Establishment for equal pay, the fiercely private king was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relieve the glories of his past."

Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine), the movie also stars Elisabeth Shue, Sarah Silverman, Alan Cumming, Andrea Risenborough, Eric Christian Olsen, and Natalie Morales.
