Ben Affleck has headed back to Atlanta, Georgia, to celebrate his birthday this weekend with his children despite the ongoing scandal surrounding his relationship with his former family nanny Christine Ouzounian.

The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice actor, who turns 43 on Saturday, was spotted Friday in the Southern state, to which he's been traveling back and forth throughout most of the summer. Affleck and estranged wife Jennifer Garner's children (Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3) are residing in Atlanta while the actress films Miracles from Heaven. The actor headed straight to Garner's Atlanta rental house after his flight, PEOPLE has learned.

Affleck was seen out with the kids as they attempted to visit the Imagine It! Children's Museum. After finding it closed, they headed instead to the city's Fernbank Science Center.

Since announcing their divorce on June 30, Affleck and Garner have shown a united front for their children. Both stars have continued to wear their wedding rings, even amid allegations that Affleck had an affair with Ouzounian (Affleck's rep vehemently denies the allegations).

"He's happiest when he's with his family," says a close friend.

A friend of Affleck's previously told PEOPLE, "He's focused on his kids and his work. He's trying to ignore this circus."

Ouzounian, 29, hit the streets of L.A. this week driving a brand-new Lexus convertible, sparking rumors that Affleck gifted her the lavish car.

"He did not buy her the car," a friend of the star told PEOPLE. "It's not from him."

The source also denied claims from a friend of Ouzounian that the pair were "in touch every day, all day long."

"They are not in communication. They are not talking," Affleck's friend said.

Ouzounian has attracted plenty of attention, ringing up an estimated $12,100 tab at the Hotel Bel-Air, and trying on Tom Brady's Super Bowl rings in newly surfaced photos.

Despite the heightened scrutiny, Affleck's pal Matt Damon told reporters on Monday that the actor was doing "great."

"He's great, he's great," Damon said when the pair hit the red carpet at the premiere of the HBO series Project Greenlight in Los Angeles. "He's got a big smile on his face."
