One of the most visible social media stars of Bernie Sanders's underdog campaign against Hillary Clinton was Oliver Jack Carter Lomas-Davis, better known on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as the "Bernie Baby."

Lomas-Davis's mother Souxsie would dress her son up as the upstart Vermont senator, decked out in Sanders's trademark gravity-defying hair and thick-rimmed glasses. And sadly, according to Lomas's Facebook, her son died on Feb. 25 at just 4 months old, of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Sanders met Oliver Jack at a rally in Las Vegas a few weeks ago, and was snapped grinning at his doppelgänger.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family with the cost of a memorial service and burial, which will be Monday, March 7, at Forest Lawn Cemetery in the Hollywood Hills, California.

SIDS (or "crib death") is the leading cause of death among children ages 1 month to 1 year old, and results in approximately 2,500 fatalities annually in the U.S. Despite years of research, it remains something of a mystery: incidences increase during cold weather; African-American and Native American infants are twice and three times as likely, respectively, to succumb to it than Caucasian infants; and more male babies die from it than females.
