Still mourning the death of his daughter Bobbi Kristina, Bobby Brown stepped out at a more lighthearted atmosphere Tuesday night: L.A.'s Ha Ha Café Comedy Club
Brown attended an all-star comedy show with about six other people, all of whom were family members, says an observer.
"He was in a good mood," added the source.
"He was jovial," a second onlooker tells PEOPLE. Still, though: "He was fairly open with his feelings with fans, stating that he was heartbroken."
The outing is one of his first since laying his daughter to rest next to her mother, Whitney Houston, in New Jersey on Aug. 3.
It's been a difficult time for Brown, 46, following Bobbi Kristina's death on July 26. In addition to mourning at the funeral and burial, his wife, Alicia Etheredge, suffered a seizure after the funeral. Then, just days after the burial, court documents surfaced that accuse Bobbi Kristina's boyfriend, Nick Gordon, of causing her "wrongful death." (Gordon's lawyers call the lawsuit "slanderous and meritless.)
