California Chrome Loses Triple Crown Bid, Tonalist Wins Belmont Stakes

Tonalist won the Belmont Stakes, and California Chrome finished far back in a tie for fourth Saturday.
Hopes had been high that the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner would end the longest Triple Crown drought in horse racing history.
In an industry dominated by millionaires and billionaires, California Chrome was an underdog. Owners Perry Martin and Steve Coburn bred an $8,000 mare to a $2,500 stallion to win two of the world's most famous races with their one-horse stable.
But the 3-year-old and jockey Victor Espinoza lost the 1½-mile race on a hot day at Belmont Park, where tens of thousands of fans were packed in hoping to see history.
It was not to be, leaving Affirmed as the most recent Triple Crown winner in 1978.
