Sneak Peek: Watch Chris Evans in His Directorial Debut Film Before We Go

Chris Evans gets called Captain America a lot. But now he's got a new moniker: Mr. Director.

That's right, the A-list actor has stepped behind the camera and directed his first feature film, Before We Go, a romantic drama that debuted at the Toronto Film Festival last fall.

Evans also stars in the film as a Grand Central Station trumpet player who befriends a woman (Star Trek Into Darkness' Alice Eve) after her purse is stolen.

In a preview clip exclusive to PEOPLE, Evans' character, Nick, chats with lonesome-looking Brooke (Eve) as she hunkers down at a bench and stalls leaving New York City to head back home to her husband.

"Why do you have to beat him home?" Nick asks. "Is there something you gotta do before he gets there?"

A conflicted Brooke struggles with an answer, laying the groundwork for a narrative that leaves Nick – and the audience – deeply intrigued.

Before We Go is available on VOD and iTunes now, and will be in theaters Sept. 4.
