Is there anything more cringeworthy than getting marriage advice from your soon-to-be in-laws?

Perhaps, if that advice spans topics from finances to marital intimacy – and is discussed publicly at a frozen yogurt shop.

Derick Dillard, who married Jill Duggar in June and is expecting his first child with her, had the awkward experience on Tuesday night's episode of 19 Kids & Counting. The couple had a premarital counseling session led by Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar.

"The four of us meet on a weekly basis for counseling," matriarch Michelle, 48, says in the exclusive clip. "I believe it is our responsibility to equip our children to be prepared for that next step in life of marriage."

And the Duggars are doing just that by going through a book with Jill, 23, and Derick, 25, in which the discussion topic changes weekly.

"There's family relationships, how would you handle stress and then the intimate side of marriage," Michelle says.

This week's topic? Finances. And Jill's overprotective dad, Jim Bob, 49, isn't holding back on the tough questions.

"Did your family buy used vehicles?" he asks Derick. Fortunately for his future son-in-law, Derick's family didn't ever buy brand new cars.

"What do you think about debt?" Jim Bob continues. "Say your engine blew up on your car and you're running low on cash, what would you do?"

"Probably have an emergency fund," Derick replies.

"What if that was depleted?" Jim Bob asks.

"I wouldn't go into debt," Derick says.

Good answer.

19 Kids & Counting airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on TLC.
