Accepting the trophy for his Spectre track "Writing's on the Wall," the singer mistakenly suggested he was the first openly gay man to win an Oscar, when a handful of out-and-proud men (from Elton John to Black) have taken home Academy Awards.
Just hours after his speech, Black (who in 2009 won for Best Original Screenplay for Milk) took to social media to take Smith to task – and to tell him to stay away from his betrothed, Olympic diver Tom Daley.
"Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé," Black, 41, Tweeted Sunday night alongside a clip of his 2009 speech. Monday morning, he added: "THE POINT: knowing our LGBTQ history is important. We stand on the shoulders of countless brave men and women who paved the way for us."

Smith, 23, apologized to Black and dismissed the backlash on Monday without addressing the texting claim.
But by Monday evening, Black settled the assumed drama once and for all, tweeting: "Dear Internet: @TomDaley1994 and @samsmithworld are pals. They text. Thus my surprise Sam took me for a closet case! Feel free to laugh."

Daley, 21, and his fiancé have been open about their romance in the past. Here’s a look back at their relationship, in their own words.

When they first met, Daley was still in the closet – and had to Google Black to find out who he was
"My friend texted me from across the table, and his text said, 'He's Google-searching you.' Well don't read into that too much. I do that occasionally at dinner tables. But that, in combination with the look [he gave me], made me think, 'Something’s up here.' ... [At the end of the night,] Tom took my phone, and he typed his number in with a winky face. At which point I felt I had confirmation that he was a gay. I've never in my life heard of a straight man putting his number in another man's phone with a winky face," Black said in his and Daley's February 2016 Out magazine cover story of the first time they met in 2013.
They began dating exclusively after their first real date.
The day after his 19th birthday,"That was the night he said, 'Tom will you be my boyfriend?' when we were drunk in the hotel, and then he said, 'Actually, you don't have to answer that.' When I woke up the next morning, I turned to him and said, 'Yes.' And he said, 'What do you mean, "Yes"?' And I said, 'Yes, I'll be your boyfriend,'" Daley said in the Out cover.
It was love at first sight.
"Love is a commitment to me – something that goes deep. You can't have that at first sight. It has to be earned. But did we start to fall in love at first sight? I believe so," Black told Out.
Daley's relationship with Black inspired him to come out.
"My life changed massively when I met someone, and it made me feel so happy, so safe ... That someone is a guy," Daley said in his coming-out video on YouTube in December 2013. "I'm dating a guy, and I couldn't be happier."

They talked about long-term goals early on in their relationship, from marriage...
"Quite honestly, we talked about marriage within the first two weeks after seeing each other the first time in L.A. That was the weird thing: that it came up in conversation so many times. I always knew it was going to happen at some point," Daley said in the Out feature.
...to having kids.
"We were so busy making all these plans – we both wanted to have children; we both wanted to build a home of our own someday. I draw, so I was sketching little plans for houses on cliffs overlooking oceans, while Tom watched over my shoulder – it was a very grown-up version of playing house. Marriage is the foundation to all of these other big plans we have. So we knew we were going to get engaged – it was just a matter of when, and who does it," Black told Out.
Their proposal was very traditional.
Between announcing their engagement in the newspaper to how they prepped to pop the question, Black and Daley went about it the old-fashioned way.
"It turns out that we had both asked each other's parents, and we both had rings ready to go," Daley told Out of their proposal, which – after months of planning – happened in London while they were in their underwear getting ready for bed.
