Reports of marital problems have plagued the couple over the past year, including a recent claim that de Rossi, 41, has spent time in a rehab facility. While the couple have yet to comment, an insider tells PEOPLE they are taking it all in stride.
"They've had their ups and downs," the source tells PEOPLE in this week's issue. "Portia has been very outspoken about previous issues, like her eating disorder, and she's good at seeking help when she needs to. They've worked out difficulties in the past, and no doubt they're trying to work out any problems right now."
While the couple share many passions, including renovating houses – they reportedly just sold one of their homes in Los Angeles for $55 million – and animal causes, DeGeneres's professional workload may have become an issue, the insider says.
"At times Portia felt overwhelmed at all that goes into redoing a house and moving to another, no matter how lucrative it may be," says the source. "She felt like she was doing everything herself and needed some downtime."
Yet DeGeneres, 56, told PEOPLE in February that any notion that de Rossi was unhappy was laughable. "One tabloid said Portia's leaving me because she doesn't like moving a lot," she said. "Which is funny because she is overseeing the construction of our new house and loving it."
As for the couple's anniversary next month, friends wouldn't be surprised if they decide to renew their wedding vows as well.
"They both love to celebrate special occasions and holidays, and their wedding anniversary is no different. They usually celebrate with a big party and invite a lot of friends," the insider says. "They really are a lovely couple. They enjoy being married, and it shows."
