Ellen Pompeo dropped by the The Ellen DeGeneres Show to discuss Grey's Anatomy's 12th season and how much her character has changed. Ellen DeGeneres began the conversation by congratulating the 46-year-old on 12 successful seasons and touched on Patrick Dempsey's shocking departure from their hit ABC show. His beloved character – Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd, was killed off at the end of Season 11.
DeGeneres noted that fans were ready to throw in the towel after Dempsey's departure saying, "everybody thought because Patrick was leaving [Grey's Anatomy] that it wouldn't do well, but it's doing very well."
"Yeah, it's amazing how much you get done without a penis," Pompeo jokingly replied. "We miss him dearly, but yeah the show is doing very well."
DeGeneres also addressed the rumors that Grey's Anatomy is coming to an end, but Pompeo quickly debunked them.
"No, it's not the last season," the actress said. "I think a lot of people were really upset about his departure, which is super understandable. But I think the change is part of the reason why the show goes on so long. I think people tune in to see what is the show look like now. What is Meredith going to do without Derek. I think they get so upset about the change, but change is precisely what everyone always needs to sort of get to the next place."
Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.
