Police were called after a cable installer came across the body of the 21-month-old girl while working in the home.
Eric Warfel, the father of the toddler, whose name was Ember Warfel, had not been seen at home by neighbors since the previous night, Fox 8 reports. He was located by police in Westlake, Ohio, with his 7-year-old daughter and was arrested and charged with abuse of a corpse. Additional charges will likely follow, an official at the Medina County Sheriff’s Office says.
On Thursday, Warfel appeared in court, where a judge said the father told authorities that the deceased child died on or around June 18, according to KTLA 5. Warfel failed to notify anyone of the child's death, the judge also said.
Medina police say Warfel told them he'd been throwing trash into the child's bedroom to cover up the smell of the decomposing body, according to Fox 8.
It was also reportedly revealed in court that Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's office records show this is the second child Warfel has lost in the past two years.
Five-month-old Erin Delynn Warfel died in March 2013, the records show. The baby died while Warfel lived in Cleveland, and the cause of death was ruled as "sudden unexplained infant death," according to the Associated Press.
Ember's mother and Warfel's ex-wife, Malinali Galdamez, was notified by police of her daughter's death and the discovery of her body, according to a Medina Police Department press release.
Warfel had sole custody of Ember, the AP reports.
Following Warfel's arrest, Medina detectives obtained a search warrant for a motel room where they recovered what appeared to be cocaine and a mobile phone believed to belong to Warfel, the press release states.
Warfel's bond is set at $1 million.
