As a mother, ESPN anchor Hannah Storm has a serious question for the NFL: What do you stand for?

The sportscaster ended Sunday's telecast of SportsCenter by reflecting on the Ray Rice controversy and how it prompted more questions than answers from her three daughters.

Rather than enjoy the start of another football season, Storm said, her family was forced to discuss the "horrific" elevator incident involving ex-Baltimore Ravens player Rice and his now-wife Janay Palmer. Rice was dropped from the Ravens after the video, which shows the running back punching Palmer, surfaced.

"I spent this week answering seemingly impossible questions about the league's biggest star," said Storm, choking back tears. " 'Mom, why did he do that? Why isn't he in jail? Why didn't he get fired?' And yesterday, 'Why don't they even have control over their own players?' "

Storm went on to question what the incident means for the NFL's future and its relationship with female followers, who, she said, account for 45 percent of the NFL's total fan base.

On Saturday, Rice and his wife made their first public appearance together since the release of the video by attending a high school football game.
