Even among the current crop of soul-inspired indie bands, Fitz and the Tantrums stand out. Their high-energy sound and retro-cool look have led their music to be placed in television, movies, video games and more.

The group, named "The Hardest-Working Band of the 2011 Summer Festival Circuit" by Vogue, haven't let up. They're playing Governors Ball Saturday in NYC, and their tour schedule has them booked until 2015. We spoke with Michael Fitzpatrick as the group prepared for the show.

What's your favorite part about playing festivals?
There's nothing like playing in front of 20,000 people. It's exhilarating, and we get to see all of our friends in other bands.

How about your not-so-favorite part?
Port-A-Potties!

Who are you excited to see perform at Governors Ball?
Outkast!

Two of your songs have been used in skateboarding videos – are there any skaters, current or former, in the band?
I used to, until I almost broke my neck. Then I retired!

In 2011, you said you consciously wanted to make Fitz and the Tantrums a "no-guitar band." As electronic music has gotten more mainstream attention, do you feel like you were ahead of your time?
We never thought of it in those terms. The "no guitar" thing just worked for us and helped us develop our own sound.

Your last album, More Than Just a Dream, came out a year ago. Are you working on a follow-up?
Ideas are brewing, but we're touring until 2015. We are about to launch the third single from More Than Just a Dream, "Fools Gold."

Be sure to catch the group on their extensive current tour. More Than Just a Dream is available on iTunes and a variety of streaming services.
