Former President Jimmy Carter had surgery Monday to remove a small mass in his liver.

The 90-year-old underwent an elective procedure at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta and "his operation proceeded without issues, and the prognosis is excellent for a full recovery," The Carter Center said in a statement.

Carter, who cut short a trip to Guyana in May because of health concerns, was in Austin, Texas, on Saturday to sign copies of his new book, A Full Life, Reflections at Ninety.
