Hannah (Lena Dunham), Marnie (Allison Williams), Jessa (Jemima Kirke) and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) have spent their 20s (a.k.a. the past four seasons) trying hard to become independent women, but they are at their most entertaining when forced back together to deal with their past relationships.
So Marnie's wedding to her musician boyfriend Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) serves as an ideal setting to kick off Girls' fifth (and second-to-last) season.
"This is like a rom-com that even I wouldn't want to watch," Hannah tells her boyfriend Fran (Jake Lacy) during a drizzly day spent with the bridezilla.
And rain isn't the only thing threatening to derail the big day. There's also cold feet; Marnie's love-sick ex Ray (Alex Karpovsky); her controlling mom (Rita Wilson, showing a new side of her character); and Adam (Adam Driver) and Jessa's forbidden love.
Hannah may not want to watch, but fans will.
Season 5 of Girls premiered Sunday (at 10 p.m. ET) on HBO.
