Actress Glenn Close and her husband, biotech entrepreneur David Shaw, have divorced after nine years of marriage.

A spokesperson for Close confirmed the split to PEOPLE on Wednesday, and the decision to divorce is said to have been made amicably. Close, 68, and Shaw wed in 2006 in a small, private ceremony in Maine. The couple had resided in Scarborough, Maine.

Close's marriage to Shaw was her third. She was previously married to singer-songwriter Cabot Wade from 1969 to 1971, and she was married to businessman James Marlas form 1984 to 1987. Close has one daughter, Annie Starke, from a relationship with movie producer John Starke.

In a 1987 interview with PEOPLE, Close shared her thoughts on marriage in light of her divorce from Marlas.

"Too many women define themselves in terms of a man," she said. "I think of men and women as two different species. Katharine Hepburn said they should live next door and visit each other once in a while. Not a bad idea."

On Tuesday, it was announced that Close would star in a London revival of the stage musical version of Sunset Boulevard, in which she will play Norma Desmond.
