Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale's Love Story in Their Own Words

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale's marriage of nearly 13 years was a match made in rock 'n' roll heaven.

Stefani, who filed for divorce from Rossdale on Monday, previously revealed to Marie Claire in 2012 that her marriage was her "biggest accomplishment."

Marriage "is something that I always wanted to do successfully. It was a dream of mine. I like the official-ness and the family-ness of it all, having the same name and making decisions together."

That dream came to an end Monday when the couple split, with Rossdale immediately filing a response to Stefani's divorce petition. Earlier this year, the mom of three told Cosmopolitan how pleased she was that their romance had made it through the years.

"We go through so much together – it's a miracle that we could stay together this long," she said at the time.

With Rossdale on tour at the time, the No Doubt singer added, "It's good to have those days when we both do our own things. I think that's what keeps relationships going, when both people can be themselves and have their own individuality."

Back in February, the Bush frontman told the Washington Times that "the best thing about being with Gwen is that we understand each other and understand the demands and commitments of the job."

He added, "The bad thing is that really I wish that, when I hit the road, she was coming with me. On the bus and being my wife just hanging out with me. But instead she's going crazy for her rehearsals."

Stefani and Rossdale, who were together for 20 years, share three sons – Kingston, 9, Zuma, 7 this month, and Apollo, 17 months. Last year the rocker, 49, told Elle that his life with Stefani is "incredible."

"It is the ultimate collaboration," Stefani previously told Vogue of her marriage. "Both of us have such strong opinions about how it should be, and it's really fun to do it together."

"One thing we've had in our relationship the whole time is that we can have it both ways: together, not together, and it's fine," she said. "Once you have a family, it's just so obvious how everyone needs each other. So it's really nice to have him back."
