Helena Bonham Carter admits she felt "fragile" after splitting from director Tim Burton after more than a decade together – and that's okay.

The actress, 49, opened up about her 2014 breakup in the May edition of UK Harper's Bazaar, admitting that despite the amicable end to their 13-year romance, the breakup still had a deep emotional impact.

"You go through massive grief – it is a death of a relationship, so it’s utterly bewildering. Your identity, everything, changes," Carter said, according to the Evening Standard.

The Alice Through The Looking Glass star admitted she considered sticking "handle with care" tape across her forehead following the split to warn people "I'm not myself at the moment, so be careful."

"There's a great quote I've stuck next to the kettle. It's from Alice: 'I can't explain myself … because I'm not myself,' " she continued. "Everyone always says you have to be strong and have a stiff upper lip, but it’s okay to be fragile."

Fast-forward to 2016 and Carter is now in a very different place. In fact, she's relishing her post-Burton life as a chance to renew and refresh.

"I feel very self-sufficient at the moment," Carter explained. "I'm just going to work out who I am on my own and it's quite liberating."

She also hasn't ruled out working with the Beetlejuice director again, and has remained a close friends with him despite the split.

"We really do get on, so that's good," she added about Burton, 57, with whom she has two children, 12-year-old son Billy and 8-year-old daughter Nell. "I understand him very well and he understands me."

"It might be easier to work together without being together any more," she joked. "He always only cast me with great embarrassment."
