A human skull and other remains were uncovered by investigators in a Valinda, California, backyard on Friday.

Police said that the remains are believed to be linked to a missing persons case from 2009, CBS Los Angeles reports.

Investigators started digging at the home on Thursday morning after receiving a tip that a body may have been buried there, according to KABC.

The missing person in question was not a resident of the home, and cops believe the current residents are unrelated to the case, Lt. Victor Lewandowski told CBS before the discovery. He added that officials "had enough probable cause" to secure a search warrant for the residence.

"I can confirm we have a human body in the backyard," Lewandowski said outside the home later on Friday, according to KTLA.

He added: "It's now a murder investigation."

Authorities are still working to extract the remains from the grave, a process that will be "tedious," Lewandowski said.

The current residents are cooperating with the investigation, officials said.
