Just hours after Travis Alexander was found dead in June 2008, his friend Daniel Freeman decided to call Jodi Arias to tell her about the killing.

It was a bizarre conversation. Freeman didn't yet know that Arias was involved in the slaying.

For years, Freeman has kept quiet about their talk. He finally speaks out in Murder Made Me Famous, a new true-crime docuseries on the Reelz Channel.

"She picked up and said hello," Freeman recalls. "She didn't sound off or expecting anything. I couldn't speak for a minute."

"She's like, 'Dan, are you there?' and I said, 'Jodi, Travis is gone.' "

According to Freeman, it took a moment for the news to sink in. "She said, 'What?' " he recalls. "I said, 'He's dead, Jodi. They found him today. He was killed.' And I was just quiet."

Arias pretended to be shocked by the news. "She cried on the phone," recalls Freeman. "She was quiet for a minute, breathing heavy. She sounded to me like someone in distress. I just listened for two or three minutes while she cried. And I said, 'Jodi, do you need anything? Are you okay?' "

"She said, 'I'm not okay,' " recalls Freeman. " 'But there's nothing you can do.' "

On the show, Freeman also shares never-before-seen photos of Alexander and Arias. In one shot, Arias is using her thumb and forefinger to make the gesture of a gun at Alexander's head.

Later, Arias would be charged with killing Alexander. She was convicted in 2014. Earlier this year, she was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Murder Made Me Famous combines reenactments, exclusive interviews and never-before-seen photos and video to tell the story of infamous murderers. Each episode of the show features PEOPLE Senior Writer Steve Helling. The show premieres Saturday night at 9 p.m. on the Reelz Channel.
