"He was your everyday kind of guy and a great dad and very lovable," Jen tells Entertainment Tonight in a new interview. "Very much similar to characters that he was on film."
His look-alike daughter helped honor her dad recently as Second City Toronto unveiled the new John Candy Box Theatre, a memorial to the man who honed his comedy chops with the famed group.
Jen is following in her father's footsteps, embarking on her own stand-up comedy career while not getting too caught up in trying to repeat her father's success.
"[My dad] is a pretty big icon to kind of follow," Jen said, laughing. "So I've given up on that train of going, 'I want to be just like you,' because I will never be just like him."
Jen was only 14 when Candy died of a heart attack while filming Wagons East in 1994 – an experience she calls "gut-wrenching."
Candy, whose brother, Chris, is also an actor and comedian, says their dad tried to dissuade them from entering show business, but she thinks he would have eventually come around.
"I really think my dad now – he would embrace it," she says.
