The country singer can add another accolade to her already-impressive resumé, though: She was the first artist in her genre to perform at the GLAAD Media Awards.
"I can't tell you what it means to me to be here representing country music – and to play a song that has opened a lot of minds," Musgraves, 25, told PEOPLE at the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City on Saturday. "I'm just very honored and proud."
After a warm introduction by out country artist Chely Wright, the singer performed her hit "Follow Your Arrow." The song features one line ("Kiss lots of boys/Or kiss lots of girls, if that's what you're into") that earned Musgraves a "progressive" title – not that she agrees with that label.
"The fact that I'm considered 'progressive' in this day and age, to me, is kind of crazy," Musgraves says. "I'm just singing about everyday, real life and things that inspire me and people around the world. That's what country music is supposed to be all about."
And things won't be slowing down for Musgraves anytime soon. She's set to hit the road with Katy Perry this summer.
"I've never gone on tour with a strong female like [Katy], especially one that's so fun and whimsical," Musgraves says. "I'm just such a big fan."
The two teamed up last month for the CMT Crossroads series (airing June 13), and Musgraves says she's already learned a lot from her pop powerhouse counterpart.
"Her melody choices and her phrasing are so different," she says. "It helps me think outside the box. I get roped into my songwriter world sometimes, and she helps me see outside of that."
As for Musgraves's favorite Perry song? "I recently got to sing on 'Teenage Dream' with her, and that was incredible. I think it's one of the best pop songs ever written," she says. "But there's a lot. A lot of the older ones of hers: 'Hot N Cold,' 'I Kissed a Girl,' obviously."
