Katie Holmes was just the right amount of "bossy" while making her directorial debut in All We Had.

Holmes' close friend, Judy Greer, who worked onstage with the actress in the New York play Dead Accounts and later in All We Had, sang her praises for Holmes' first turn behind the camera – mostly.

"She's amazing," Greer, 40, told PEOPLE Thursday at IWC Schaffhausen's fourth annual For the Love of Cinema gala, celebrating its partnership with the Tribeca Film Festival. "She wasn't bossy, no...I mean, she's bossy, don't get me wrong, but she was never bossy with me."

And while working with a friend can be tricky at times, Greer said there was no conflict having Holmes direct her.

"I liked working for her a lot. It's fun to get immediate feedback from your friends about your performance," she said. "It's great! It's always fun to have someone come and see what you're doing from a different view."

"She's a great director," Greer added. "I think she's gonna be fine."

Holmes, 37, also attended the event (hosted by Joel McHale), as did TFF co-founder Robert De Niro, Karolina Kurkova, Scott Eastwood (who McHale jokingly kept referring to as "Scott Eastman"), Kate Mara, Jason Biggs and wife Jenny Mollen.

The doting mom to Suri, 9, plays a single mother in All We Had.

She told PEOPLE in December her first time calling the shots on set was challenging: "Very much so! But very, very rewarding."
