Seven-year-old Bryan Carroll, who was diagnosed with leukemia last year, hasn't been able to leave his house very often because he's too sick to be around a lot of people.

Unfortunately, his family's backyard wasn't exactly fit for playtime – until some local heroes stepped in for a much-needed renovation.

More than 50 volunteers from Bryan's hometown of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, came together Wednesday to transform the family's uneven, damp backyard into a lush landscaped terrace, complete with a swing set, new furniture and fire pit.

While Bryan and his family were on a train trip, the young boy's teachers, classmates and friends, spent five hours laying sod, cutting tree branches and planting flowers, CTV News reports.

They even set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the transformation.

"Bryan needs to avoid crowds and can't swim due to health, so his choices are limited at times to his home," family friend, Leanne Christie, wrote. "We want to do this for them."

The family, who was completely shocked by their community's kindness, got an even bigger surprise when NHL stars Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Nathan MacKinnon, a center for the Colorado Avalanche, dropped by to say hello to Bryan (and squirt him with a water gun!) when the yard was completed.
