The director, 48, confirmed that she has transitioned in a statement given to the Windy City Media Group, in which she said she has been out to her friends, family and some coworkers.
"Without the love and support of my wife and friends and family I would not be where I am today," she said.
Since her announcement, fans of The Matrix filmmaker, whose sibling and co-director Lana is also transgender, have taken to Twitter to support Lilly and praise her for living life as her authentic self.

Wachowski's sister, Lana, first appeared publicly as a woman in July 2012. Aside from co-directing The Matrix trilogy, the filmmaker siblings are also known for helming Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending.
