Michel Sam's emotional journey continued all the way to Las Vegas on Saturday, hours after breaking down in tears and kissing his boyfriend on camera.
Following a long monumental day
that finally saw first openly gay player Sam, 24, being selected in the seventh round of the NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams, the defensive end celebrated with a group of 10 friends, including boyfriend Vito Cammisano, at Tao Las Vegas, a source tells PEOPLE.
While inside the club, Sam spotted Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman and the two chatted for a few minutes. The outspoken Sherman had been supportive of Sam in multiple interviews following his announcement that he is gay
three months ago.
Before Sam's historic day ended, he headed to the deejay booth, where DJ Vice stopped the music to introduce the new NFL player to the supportive crowd, asking, "Do we have any Rams fans in the house?"
Following his trip, Sam will head to St. Louis to participate in the rookie camp.
The athlete previously told PEOPLE, "I'm a competitor and I love to compete and I love challenges. This will be just another challenge. I'm comfortable in who I am. And I'm proud of who I am. I don't think I'm different from anybody else."
As if Cammisano didn't already have plenty to celebrate, he apparently posted a message on Twitter, suggesting he may be one of the luckiest guys in Vegas: "I put a dollar in, I won a car. I put a dollar in, I won a car. Vegas.. We have arrived! @MikeSamFootball @SamLeaf @camRONweiss @JoeBarkett."
