The actor was unharmed, and no injuries were reported.
"Sometimes things don't go as planned and a tire blew on takeoff which caused other problems," Freeman, 78, said in a statement to PEOPLE.
"But thanks to my excellent pilot Jimmy Hobson we landed safely without a scratch," he added. "I cannot say the same about my plane. I appreciate the concern and prayers for our safety."
The actor was set to fly to Texas to shoot a segment for the series The Story of God.
Clarksdale Mayor Bill Luckett, a friend of Freeman's, confirmed to the Associated Press that the plane made a controlled forced landing at a Tunica airport shortly before sunset Saturday. It had taken off from Clarksdale and was carrying Freeman and the pilot, NBC affiliate WMC reported.
Freeman, who won an Oscar in 2004 for his performance in Million Dollar Baby, was not piloting the aircraft, which veered off the runway, authorities said.
