The woman's daughter, Heather, 19 – who is pregnant – and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, have been held in a Bali jail after the suitcase containing von Wiese-Mack's body was discovered in the trunk of a taxi at the St. Regis Bali resort.
During a police interrogation, Schaefer confessed to killing von Wiese-Mack, 62, according to the Associated Press.
"He was hurt and offended by the victim’s words in an argument with him," Bali police chief, Col. Djoko Heru Utomo told the AP. "That is the motive for the murder."
He said Mack admitted in a separate interrogation that she helped Schaefer stuff her mother's body into a suitcase. Lawyers for Mack and Schaefer could not be immediately reached for comment.
Details of the turbulent relationship between Mack and her mother surfaced during the investigation.
Police in Oak Park released 92 pages' worth of incident reports detailing some of their 86 visits to the family's home between 2004 and 2014, revealing physical violence between the mother and daughter.
Bali police spokesman Hery Wiyanto told CNN that "it appears that the motive for the killing was because she was against Schaefer's relationship with Heather."
Von Wiese-Mack's brother, William Wiese, told the Chicago Tribune the family knew of the troubles between his sister and her daughter.
"I think my sister loved Heather more than anything," Wiese told the Tribune. "She would seek our input and advice. She tried so hard to help Heather through the years with therapists and psychiatrists. It was always a struggle to get Heather to [cooperate]."
