There was not a dry eye in the house at Church of Christ in Amory, Mississippi, where mourners attended the memorial service on Friday for five young children allegedly slain by their father.

"They all loved wrestling," associate pastor Danny Ray said. "They loved going to the park and swimming. They loved chocolate cookies."

Timothy Ray Jones Jr. is charged with murdering his five children – Elaine, 1, Gabriel, 2, Nahtahn, 6, Elias, 7, and Merah, 8. The crime is believed to have occurred on Aug. 28 at his home in Red Bank, South Carolina, according to The State.

Investigators said that Jones drove from South Carolina to Alabama with the bodies of his children in his truck.

The bodies were discovered on Tuesday in plastic garbage bags in Camden, Alabama, just under a week after the children's mother and Jones' ex-wife, Amber, first reported them missing.

Jones was apprehended on Saturday after being stopped at a checkpoint in Raleigh, Mississippi, on suspicion of a DUI. There, police found blood, bleach and maggots in the car. He ultimately led authorities to the bodies.

Jones waived his right to appear in court on Friday. His lawyer Aimee Zmroczek told The State that he has had mental health issues in the past.

"We have some concerns, obviously, about his mental health. We need to make sure that gets looked at," she said, adding that Jones is "scared."

Meanwhile, Jones' father is reportedly upset with "the way he's being portrayed in the media," according to Zmroczek, and reportedly insists that his son is "not a monster."

The memorial for the children was held in Mississippi, where the children's paternal family reside. A poem was read for each child and balloons were released into the sky in their memory.

Said Ray: "I encourage the family, with all of the stories and all of the things that these beautiful kids did, to keep it in your heart and continue to watch them as they continue to play in heaven."
