Nick Jonas hopes his decision with Demi Lovato to cancel their joint tour dates in North Carolina will lead to change in the state's controversial transgender bathroom law.

The "Close" singer and Lovato announced that they were joining the ranks of Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and Ringo Starr by canceling their Honda Civic Tour: Future Now shows in Raleigh and Charlotte.

While both Jonas and Lovato are supporters of the LGBT community, this decision wasn't easy for them, Jonas said. "It's incredibly difficult for everybody and the situation there is unfortunate," Jonas told PEOPLE at the Propel Pop-Up Fitness Studio in Venice, California.

"But Demi and I and our team, we talked about how we could make the biggest impact. We felt that this was the right choice," he continued.

Jonas, 23, knows that trying to help affect social change comes with repercussions: disappointing his adoring fans. But the singer hopes they will be understanding of the decision.

"[We're] fully understanding of the fact that it would be disappointing for our fans who were looking forward to the show but really hopeful that our decision moves towards a change. And hopefully, they fall in unity with us, but we're aware of the fact that it's just disappointing and it's just a tough situation overall."

The stars canceled the dates, July 3 and 6, due to HB2, a new North Carolina law that bans cities and other local governments from passing rules to allow transgender people to use public bathrooms that match their gender identity.

The highly controversial law, signed in March by Governor Pat McCrory, came in response to a Charlotte ordinance that extended some rights to transgender and LGBT people in the city.
