"We talk about pigs all the time," Reed, 27, told PEOPLE, at the Barefoot Wine and Surfrider Foundation Beach Rescue Project in Santa Monica on Saturday. "I'm sure in the near future when we move our life back to the west coast, we will probably end up with a couple rescue pigs."
"We're going to probably rescue a pig that needs rescuing," the Vampire Diaries actor told PEOPLE a couple weeks ago at the International Bird Rescue, where he celebrated the "We All Love Wildlife" video series and released rehabilitated pelicans back into the wild with the help of some volunteers.
There may be a total of eleven mammals – four dogs, three cats, two horses and two humans – living in the Reed-Somerhalder household, but what's one more?
"The pig thing has actually become an issue because so many people went out and bought these micro mini pigs thinking they would stay this big, and then they ended up growing into like a 30 pound pig and they didn’t know what to do with it," Reed continued on Saturday.
While the environmentalist couple has been inviting furry friends into their home, whether it's to stay for good or just temporarily as a foster, they also love to share their home with friends of the human variety.
"Nothing makes me happier than having people over to the house and keeping things simple," she says. "I'm not a big party girl."
She continues, "You kind of set the environment so that you cater to what you love most, so, obviously, if you live in the city it's really cool to go out all the time, but our home is rather removed and I think it's just because we like to have people over."
