Rita Wilson is taking life as it comes in her new music video for "Along For the Ride."

The singer released the promo for her latest song on Thursday and offered PEOPLE some insight into what inspired the mood for the clip.

"'Along for the Ride' is not just that feeling that you get with your top down on a sunny day in L.A., where I was born and raised," Wilson, 59, told PEOPLE exclusively. "But it is also a metaphorical song in the sense that life is going to give you 'in your journey' a lot of ups and downs and to me it was sort of about being able to go with the flow of whatever life is throwing at you."

Wilson certainly has some personal experience with taking what life throws at you. Last April, the actress underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

In her new song, Wilson takes on an attitude similar to the one she had when battling the disease.

"If you can just look at it as 'all right some days it's going to rain, some days it's going to be sunny' but it's better not to get stuck in your kind of doldrums and get off the couch," she added. "Try to look for the sun that might be out there if you look for it."

(Of course, husband Tom Hanks' foot rubs may help.)

The video was filmed by director Steven Sebring, whom Wilson has worked with multiple times in the past, and is intended to bring a "happy" and "lively" vibe.
