As Kris Jenner revealed on Sunday's episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the problem has become so severe that the once athletic Rob, 28, has gained more than 100 lbs. in the past year. His desire to hide away kept him from Kim's wedding to Kanye West, as well as from Christmas and various other family events.
However, Rob was not yet ready to accept help – an intervention planned by Kris and signed off on by Kim, Khloé and Kourtney fell on deaf ears.
When the interventionists arrived at Khloé's home, where Rob has been living, he shut himself away in his room and called Khloé, upset over the intrusion. She broke down into tears, begging him to accept help. "Do you think it's fair to do this to me? …. I've been through this how many times?" she asked, likely referencing her failed relationship with Lamar Odom, which became strained amid his alleged drug abuse and refusal to rehabilitate.
"It's not fair for you guys to do this to me all the time. It's not fair. Just accept the f---ing help," she said, crying.
When he continued to refuse, however, Kim, 34, insisted that the family start doling out tough love, calling their constant allowances for Rob "pathetic" and adding, "We're not gonna cater to him anymore, but it has to be all of us."
Kim urged Khloé to kick Rob out of the house and to cut him off. "We've done every other way," she said. "There's no other way to do it."
When Khloé's attempt at tough love drove Rob farther away, he called Kris, who acted as his enabler by allowing him to stay at her house.
"I cry myself to sleep literally every night worrying about [Rob]," said Kris. "It's breaking my heart."
The attempted intervention shown on Sunday's KUWTK may have been the first, but it won't be the last.
As previously reported by PEOPLE, the family has tried to stage multiple interventions. However, "[Rob] is very against therapy and any kind of rehab," said a source close to the family. "But his family will continue to push for him to get help until he does."
