It's not easy being one of the most visible faces of a huge franchise.

Just ask Chris Evans, whose fame as Captain America caused his "I'm going to take a break from acting but also I'm not" statements to blow up earlier this year.

Or ask Robert Downey Jr., who seems to be enjoying playing coy about his role in the Iron Man franchise and the Marvel Universe.

Downey gave two seemingly contradictory interviews Tuesday: During the day, he told Ellen DeGeneres that he was going to do a fourth Iron Man.

"You know, we're in the middle of negotiations," he told her, before admitting, "Okay, yes."

Later in the day, talking to David Letterman, Downey said that there wouldn't be a fourth Iron Man – though, he added, "I'm gonna do other stuff with Marvel."

Tuesday's interviews built on probably in-jest comments the actor made to Deadline: Downey said he'd don the Iron Man suit again if Mel Gibson directed the fourth installment.

Then, in a Reddit AMA, he directed inquiring minds elsewhere: "Sooner than later, the Marvel roster will be made public and all questions will be answered."

Curious parties should probably seek to get their hands on a copy of Downey's Marvel contract.

Marvel, apparently, holds its actors to multiple-picture deals: Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes in the Captain America franchise) and Samuel L. Jackson are both contracted to do nine films, while Downey's contract reportedly is a little looser.

You can next catch Downey costarring with Robert Duvall in the courtroom dramedy The Judge, opening Friday.
